Manchester United has officially announced plans to build a new stadium with a 100,000-seat capacity, which will replace their historic Old Trafford, which has stood for 115 years.

The new stadium will become the largest in the UK, surpassing Wembley, and will serve as the centerpiece of a major regeneration initiative in the Trafford Wharfside area.

This decision comes after Sir Jim Ratcliffe conducted a comprehensive review of the club's infrastructure following his takeover in February 2024.

While redeveloping Old Trafford was initially considered, with a potential capacity increase to 87,000, the club ultimately decided that a new stadium would provide greater potential for expansion.

The design of the stadium has been entrusted to world-renowned architect Norman Foster, famous for his work on landmarks such as Wembley’s iconic arch and Apple’s futuristic headquarters.

Manchester United anticipates that the project could bring £7.3 billion into the local economy, generate 92,000 jobs, create over 17,000 new homes, and attract an additional 1.8 million visitors every year. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has already voiced her public support for the regeneration plans.

However, securing funding for the project remains a significant challenge, with costs estimated to exceed £2 billion.

The club is reportedly considering various options, including the sale of stadium naming rights, to finance the development.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, commented: "Old Trafford has served us well for 115 years, but it's no longer among the world’s best. By building next to the current site, we can preserve its spirit while creating a modern stadium that enhances the fan experience, just steps from our historic home."
