Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) will be implemented in English domestic football for the first time during the fifth round of the FA Cup.
On Thursday, the Football Association (FA) confirmed that the technology will be used in the seven matches at Premier League stadiums, with plans for the Premier League to implement it later this season following its successful use in the Emirates FA Cup.
The system is designed to minimize human subjectivity by replacing decisions typically made by officials with those automatically generated by technology.

Premier League clubs approved the semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) for the 2024-25 season, after its successful trial in the Emirates FA Cup.
The system, which was delayed for testing, enhances accuracy by using optical tracking for the virtual offside line and produces graphics for clearer fan experience. While it doesn't alter decision accuracy, it speeds up the process.
VAR will still be active in all FA Cup fifth-round matches, including those at Championship club Preston. The fifth round is scheduled for the weekend of March 1.
